Microsoft's decision to completely eliminate passwords
Using weak passwords often proves disastrous for account security, which is why some companies want to completely eliminate the decades-old password system.
Microsoft is one such major technology company that will soon completely eliminate the use of passwords for accounts and replace them with passkeys. The company is completely eliminating the use of passwords in August 2025.
Starting in June 2025, users will no longer be able to add passwords to Microsoft Authenticator.
In July, they will be unable to use AutoFill, while access to Store Passwords will be lost from August 1st, and they will then have to configure passkeys.
Passkeys are essentially digital keys that are more secure because they are not stored on a web server.
Instead of a long password, this technology uses a 4-digit PIN code or biometric details to log in.
This is why it also eliminates the risk posed to accounts by weak passwords, while password managers often become targets of hackers, while passkeys do not face this problem.
According to the company, it will send users a passkey creation prompt in Authenticator.
If you don't use Authenticator, you will be notified via email or other methods to create a passkey.
A new section for passkeys is also being added to Microsoft Authenticator, by clicking on which you can generate a passkey.
Logging in with passkeys is faster and easier than with passwords.
However, one problem with passkey technology is that if you lose the mobile phone that stores the passkey, you have to struggle a lot to log back into your account.
